The newest COVID-19 Variant - Omicron maybe be highly infectous and not as responsive to available vaccines than many of the other variants. According to Dr. Fauci, there's a 'Very unusual constelation of change" accross the COVID-19 genome that indicates it is unlike any varint we have seen so far. The new variant mutations have been associated with increased transmissibility and immune evasion.
Omicron is the fifth designated COVID-19 variant of concern.
It was first detected in South Africa and has been found in 21 countries including the United States. Omicron has greater than 30 mutations to the spike protien - the part of the virus that binds to human cells, according to Dr. Fauci
Detected first in South Africa, Omicron has been found in 20 countries so far. There are no known cases yet in the United States, but it has been detected in Canada.
