What is DOT and NON DOT?

DOT stands for the Department of Transportation. DOT rules and regulations apply to employees involved in the safety-sensitive positions of the transportation industry. These include positions such as drivers, pilots,  maintenance personnel, and dispatchers, among others. DOT drug tests are highly regulated and are required by law for all safety-sensitive positions. The DOT requires a 5 panel drug test as the standard for drug screening in their regulated industries.

On the other hand, NON DOT refers to all the other industries that are not under DOT regulations. These tests are not regulated and are based on the employer’s preferences. However, it’s crucial to understand that NON DOT employers can still enforce drug-free workplace policies and conduct drug tests according to their facilities’ appetite.

What is a DOT-5 Panel Drug Screen?

The DOT-5 Panel drug screen is a urine test that analyzes a sample for five specific drugs: marijuana (THC), cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP) and are all under schedule II or II on th DEA’s schedule of drugs. These drugs are identified as significant under the DOT’s regulated industries and are common drugs that affect workplace safety. The DOT requires strict guidelines and follows a specific chain of custody process to ensure accurate results. Any DOT regulated employee who uses these drugs faces strict repercussions, including immediate termination. Employers can allow an employee to return to work after they have visited with a SAP (Substance Abuse Professional), finished treatment plan and performs first return to duty testing.  Completion of a follow-up testing program is necessary as part of ongoing employment requirements.

What is a 10-Panel Drug Screen?

The 10-Panel drug screen is a broader drug test than the DOT 5-panel drug screen. It tests for ten specific drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, methadone, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, propoxyphene, methadone,  methaqualone, and PCP. Unlike the DOT drug screen, this test is not mandatory in all industries and is at the employer’s discretion.

What is a DOT Physical?

A DOT Physical is an exam administered by a qualified healthcare provider to drivers who are regulated by the Department of Transportation. The medical examination helps to identify any medical conditions or medications that could affect a driver’s ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. This examination is mandatory for CDL drivers and must be renewed every two years.

What is a NON DOT Physical?

A NON DOT Physical is an exam that is essential for the non-DOT-industries or non-regulated, and employers can choose to conduct this examination. This examination helps employers identify any current or previous medical conditions that could impact an employee’s job performance. Extra benefits is employers are able to address issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes before it becomes a major cost issue with employee health and insurance costs.

FMCSA Clearinghouse and Supervisor Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training

The FMCSA Clearinghouse is a database that provides real-time information regarding commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders who are prohibited from controlling a commercial motor vehicle due to a drug and alcohol program violation. This database strengthens enforcement, enhances safety, and promotes compliance with DOT regulations. Each employer must register and perform pre-employment queries on each new hire and an annual query on each driver annually.  Medical Review Officer will report all positive drug screens and medical refusals.  The Employer is mandated to report positive alcohols and refusals to test (including those that are a no show or collection site refusals.  Employers do not report no shows for pre-employments.  An employer can appoint a CTPA to perform all reporting and query requirements.  Confused with the FMCSA Clearinghouse?  The Clearinghouse FMCSA can be complicated.  Workplace Screening Intelligence (WSI) offers a simple solution with WSI’s Clearinghouse Memberships.  We will help you get registered and take care of all your reporting and query requirements.  Call 844-573-8378 or support@workplacescreening.com or press on link below to order a Clearinghouse Membership today: https://workplacescreening.com/product/fmcsa-clearinghouse-membership/

Drug and Alcohol Policy

A drug-free workplace policy is essential to enable DOT-regulated and non-DOT industries to maintain a safe and effective workplace. This practice helps protect employees’ health, safety, and productivity while maintaining the agency’s reputation and minimizing risk. The policy should outline the prohibited substances and the consequences for employees who violate the policy, such as termination and referral to treatment.
