What Drugs are Tested on a DOT Drug Test?

As mentioned earlier, the DOT drug test tests for five categories of drugs. Here is a breakdown of what drugs are included in each category:

1. Marijuana: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the active ingredient in marijuana, is tested on the DOT drug test.

2. Cocaine: The DOT drug test tests for cocaine and its metabolites, including benzoylecgonine and ecgonine methyl ester.

The Role of Medical Review Officer (MRO):

A Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a licensed physician responsible for reviewing and verifying drug test results. MROs are an essential part of the DOT drug testing program as they help ensure that drug test results are accurate and reliable. The MRO reviews and verifies test results before they are reported to the employer. If there are any discrepancies or issues with the test results, the MRO will contact the employee to verify their prescription medication or request additional testing. The MRO also serves as the watch dog for Safety Sensitive Issues with prescriptions.  Although the employee has a legal prescription for a narcotic, it may cause a safety sensitive issue with taking the prescription and performing safety sensitive duties.  In this case, the MRO will issue a safety sensitive letter for the employee to take to the prescribing physician or occupational physician.  After reviewing, most physicians will change the prescription to another prescription that alleviates the concern.

Supervisor Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training:

DOT Employers are required to provide their supervisors with Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training. NON DOT employers should provide as well.  The training must cover the following topics:

1. The effects of drugs and alcohol on an individual’s physical and mental state.

2. The signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol use.

3. The company’s drug and alcohol policies, including consequences for violating them.

4. The resources available for employees who test positive for drugs and alcohol.
