Screening Your Employees

Screening Your Employees: The Ultimate Guide for Employers

In today’s professional landscape, ensuring a safe and productive workplace is paramount. Employee screening, particularly in the realm of drug testing, plays a crucial role. Whether you’re an HR manager, a safety officer, or an employer, understanding the intricacies of employee screening, including complying with relevant regulations such as the FMCSA Clearinghouse, is integral to your company’s success.

Employee Drug Testing

Employee drug testing is a tool used by employers to detect the use of illegal drugs or misuse of prescription medications among their staff. It can deter employees from engaging in drug use and provide a safer work environment, while also protecting the company from potential liability.

With a myriad of options available, from non-dot drug screens to Hair Follicle Drug Tests, employers must select the method that aligns with their company policies and regulatory requirements. Urine drug screenings remain the most common due to their accuracy and cost-effectiveness.

  5. Phencyclidine (PCP)

  5. Opiates
  6. Benzodiazepines

Alternative Drug Testing Technologies

Beyond the traditional urine test, employers have other testing methods at their disposal:

Hair Follicle Drug Test

This test provides a longer detection window up to 90 days but is more expensive than urine tests.  Th hair follicle drug test is also directly observed and thwarts those attempting to cheat.

Oral Fluid Drug Test

Also known as a Saliva drug test, this method is less invasive and can detect recent drug use within hours.  The Oral Fluid drug test also is directly observed.

Medical Review Officer (MRO)

An MRO is a licensed physician responsible for reviewing and analyzing drug test results. They ensure the accuracy of the testing process and that proper procedures are followed.

Physicals

Physical exams ensure that employees are medically and physically capable of performing their jobs without endangering themselves or others. They can be required pre-employment, after an accident, or at regular intervals.

DOT Physical

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires certain commercial vehicle drivers to pass a DOT Physical to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). These exams ensure drivers can meet the physical demands of the job. DOT employees must repeat their physical every 2 years.  Less healthier employees must repeat every 90 – 365 days according to their heal issue

NON DOT Physical

Non-DOT physicals are similar to DOT Physicals but are not regulated by federal guidelines. They are important for non-commercial drivers and other employees to ensure workplace safety.

FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) established the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to improve highway safety. It’s a database that contains information about violations of the FMCSA’s drug and alcohol testing program. Employers are required to query the Clearinghouse FMCSA to ensure that current or potential employees have no outstanding violations that prohibit them from performing safety-sensitive functions, such as driving a commercial vehicle.  Employers must do the following in order to be compliant with the FMCSA Clearinghouse:

  • Register in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Educate their supervisors and employees about rights and responsibilities with FMCSA Clearinghouse.
  • Create an addendum for the FMCSA Clearinghouse to your DOT drug and alcohol policy.
  • Perform Pre-Hire queries on each new hire.
  • Perform Annual queries on all drivers.
  • Report positive alcohols.
  • Report collection site refusals.
  • Report known drug and/or alcohol use.

FMCSA Employers can appoint a CTPA, like Workplace Screening Intelligence to perform their duties in the FMCSA Clearinghouse.  If you want more information on the FMCSA Clearinghouse or how Workplace Screening can help, contact our knowledgeable Support Staff at 844-573-8378 or support@workplacescreening.com or press on link for more information https://workplacescreening.com/fmcsa-chs/
