Can You Cheat on a Drug Test? Everything You Need to Know About Oral Fluid, 5-Panel and 10-Panel Drug Tests

In today’s society, the risk of drug use is ever-increasing, and with it, there is an increased concern about maintaining a drug-free workplace. Employers are becoming more proactive in conducting drug tests on potential hires or current employees. The question often arises if it’s possible to cheat or manipulate drug tests, especially oral fluid, 5-panel and 10-panel drug tests. The answer, in short, is yes, it can be done. However, it is much more challenging to cheat on drug tests than before. Drug testing has become more sophisticated, and technology and regulations have evolved to prevent cheating. Today, we will explore different methods of drug testing and how one can potentially cheat and ways to prevent manipulation.

Oral Fluid Drug Testing

Oral fluid drug tests are non-invasive testing that involves collecting a sample of saliva from the mouth or lower cheek. It is a reliable method to detect various drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines, and cocaine and many more drugs. The DOT has approved oral fluid testing for use as of June 1, 2023.  There are pending items that need to happen before the labs can begin testing (Lab Certification, approval of devices and more). There are several ways to cheat on an oral fluid drug test, including putting something in your mouth or on your gums to interfere with the test. However, oral fluid drug testing has become more challenging to cheat since it’s becoming more prevalent, and there are quality collection sites. Quality collection sites use proper screening to ensure that the collected sample is uncontaminated and unadulterated.  Every collector should make sure there is nothing in the donors mouth and give time for any substance that can interfere are gone.

5-Panel Drug Test

A 5-panel drug test is a basic drug test that screens for five different classes of drugs: amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine, and marijuana. An employer may request employees or potential hires to undergo the 5-panel test as a condition of employment. The frequency of testing depends on the employer’s policy, but it could be before being hired, random tests, or with job promotions. Though it is relatively easy to cheat on a 5-panel drug test, like diluting the sample or using synthetic urine, it is becoming less common with the introduction of newer testing methods, including the 10-panel drug test.  A quality drug screen collection site is trained to look for individuals that maybe cheating.  There are many steps taken to stop cheating.  Emptying pockets, locking up contents  and temperature checks are ways to stop cheating.

10 Panel Drug Test

A 10-panel drug test screens for ten different classes of drugs, including the five drugs in the 5-panel test plus barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, methaqualone and propoxyphene. The 10-panel drug test has 5 more drugs than the 5-panel drug test, making it less susceptible to manipulation. It is becoming more prominent and is the most requested test for employees in high-risk industries such as transportation, law enforcement, and healthcare. Though it is much more challenging to cheat on a 10-panel drug test, it is still possible. However, cheating will require better coverage, and it may even need help from someone who is in the testing room with you.

DOT Drug Test

The DOT or Department of Transportation is an agency responsible for enforcing drug testing regulations for employers within the transportation industry. DOT requires a specific set of drug testing guidelines, which includes urine drug testing and oral fluid drug testing , to maintain safety and security.. The DOT tests for five drugs, including cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, PCP, and marijuana. The DOT Return to Duty and Follow-up testing is challenging to cheat since it needs a direct observation collection process, and the collection site follows stringent rules and regulations.

Non-DOT Drug Test

The non-DOT test follows the same guidelines as the DOT drug test. However, it is not regulated by the DOT and is usually requested by employers in industries outside of transportation, such as healthcare, manufacturing, and law enforcement, to prevent drug use or abuse in the workplace. Non-DOT tests are becoming more common with the introduction of oral fluid testing and the 10-panel drug test, which provide better and more drugs that are screened. Non-DOT testing is harder to cheat on, especially with the introduction of quality collection sites and stricter guidelines.

In conclusion, cheating on a drug test is becoming more challenging with the improvement of technology and regulations to prevent manipulation. Oral fluid drug testing, 5-panel drug testing, 10-panel drug testing, DOT drug testing, and Non-DOT drug testing are essential methods for various employers to maintain a drug-free workplace. Cheating on a drug test can have severe consequences, including the loss of employment, tarnishing of reputation, legal action, and increased risk to oneself and colleagues. It’s essential to conduct drug testing routinely and to follow standard guidelines to ensure that the test results are accurate, and quality collection sites are used to prevent manipulation and interference with the results.  If you need assistance with your drug free workplace or need to order a drug test today, call our Support Team at 844-573-8378 or [email protected]
