1. What is a Regulated Drug Test?

A regulated drug test is a type of test mandated by the DOT to ensure that transportation-related employees are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on duty. The DOT has strict rules and regulations that govern the types of drugs that must be tested, the cutoff levels, and the testing methodology. Regulated drug tests must be a five-panel drug test that tests for Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, Amphetamines, and PCP

2. What is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a medical exam that helps to ensure that employees are physically fit to operate a commercial motor vehicle. It includes a comprehensive review of the employee’s medical history, including any medications they may be taking. The exam also includes a vision test, hearing test, and a cardiovascular and neurological examination. Additionally, the medical examiner may request additional tests like an EKG or sleep apnea testing if they feel it is necessary. It is important to note that not all medical providers are qualified to conduct DOT physicals. DOT Physicals must be repeated every two years for healthy individuals.  Less healthier individuals must repeat physical every 90-365 days according to issues.

3. What is a DOT Drug Screen?

A DOT drug screen is a type of regulated drug test that is used to detect the presence of illegal drugs or alcohol in an employee’s system. It is a urine-based test that follows stringent collection, transportation, laboratory analysis, and reporting procedures. Oral Fluid Drug testing is coming soon as it was approved by DOT in 2023 but 3 thinks must happen before DOT Employers can begin to utilize Oral Fluid Drug Testing. 1. FDA must approve oral fluid split specimen device, 2. 2 labs utilizing the same device must be inspected and certified, and 3. DOT collectors must be trained and certified to collect. Employers may choose oral fluids ensure that the drug screen collection process is observed to prevent tampering or substitution of the sample. Employees who test positive for drugs or alcohol must be removed from safety-sensitive duties until they complete the return-to-duty process, which includes an evaluation and treatment from a qualified substance abuse professional\ Return to duty drug test and follow-up testing program.  All of the Return to duty and Follow up testing must be directly observed.

4. What is the FMCSA Clearinghouse?

The FMCSA Clearinghouse is a secure online database that employers use to report and search for information regarding commercial driver’s license driver’s drug and alcohol violations. Random testing is mandated by the DOT, and employers must ensure tht a certain percentage of their employees are tested randomly each year. By using the FMCSA Clearinghouse, employers can identify employees who are ineligible for duty because they have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations. FMCSA  Employers must perform a FMCSA Clearinghouse Queries on each pre-employment as well as an annual query on each FMCSA driver.  Employers or their CTPA must also report positive alcohols, collection site refusals, and known drug and alcohol use.  Medical Review Officers or MRO must report positive drugs and medical refusals.

5. What is Random Testing?

Random testing is mandated by the DOT, and employers must ensure that a certain percentage of their employees are tested randomly each year.  Employers can choose to have a standalone pool or enroll their employees in a Random Consortium.  Larger employers typically utilize standalone pools, while smaller employers enjoy the benefit of less testing with a consortium membership.  Additionally, consortiums offer a budget friendly method where the membership covers all of the Random Testing when selected.

6. Why is Drug and Alcohol Awareness Supervisor Training Important?

DOT regulations mandate that transportation employers must provide drug and alcohol awareness supervisor training to all persons who supervise employees who perform safety-sensitive functions. The requirement mandate 60 minutes of drug and 60 minutes of alcohol awareness training.  This training is essential in helping supervisors identify signs of drug and alcohol use, understand their roles in the testing process, and know what actions to take when an employee is impaired.
