Drug tests are critical in a workplace setup to ensure safety, compliance, and productivity, and they come in different panels.

5 Panel Urine Screen

The 5-panel urine screen is the standard drug test employed by many businesses. It typically tests for five commonly abused substances:

  1. Cannabinoids (THC)
  2. Cocaine
  3. Amphetamines (including methamphetamine)
  4. Opiates (including heroin, codeine, morphine)
  5. Phencyclidine (PCP)

This test is popular because it covers a broad spectrum of common drugs, and urine samples provide a reliable medium for detection.

Drugs Tested for in a 10 Panel

Moving beyond the 5-panel test, the 10-panel drug test screens for additional substances that might not be covered in the basic panel. The drugs tested in a 10 panel include all those in the 5-panel plus:

  1. Benzodiazepines
  2. Barbiturates
  3. Methadone
  4. Propoxyphene
  5. Methaqualone (Quaaludes)

This more extensive test is often used in environments where a wider range of drug use is suspected or could present a heightened risk.

DOT Drug Test

A DOT Drug Test is a federally mandated test.   DOT requires certain safety sensitive employees test for and/or are eligible for tall testing below:

  • Pre-employment testing
  • Random testing
  • Post-accident testing
  • Reasonable suspicion testing
  • Return-to-duty testing
  • Follow-up testing

These tests regulate safety-sensitive transportation roles and industries, including trucking, aviation, and others a where employees might perform safety-critical tasks like operating a commercial vehicle.

Regulated Drug Test vs. Non Regulated Drug Test

Understanding the distinction between a regulated drug test and a non regulated drug test is critical. A regulated drug test is government-mandated, adheres to strict federal guidelines, and is usually overseen by a regulating body such as the DOT. On the other hand, non-regulated testing, often referred to as non DOT or non-reg, offers more flexibility. Employers can customize these tests based on their workplace policy or state laws. It is important that the right test is chosen as you will be out of compliance if a non-reg test is chosen for a DOT employee and face fines if a DOT is chosen for a non-dot employee.  The only exception to this is if an employer chooses to do additional testing not required by DOT (i.e., Truck driver has additional hair test with urine pre-employment or employer decides to post accident test even when FMCSA says no test require).  In both cases it is done on a non dot drug test.

Instant Drug Test 5 Panel and 10 Panel

For urgent testing needs, an instant drug test 5 panel or instant drug test 10 panel offers immediate results, typically within a few minutes. These tests are performed on-site and are a quick way to detect drug use. However, non-negative results are frequently sent to a laboratory for further confirmation.

Laboratory Testing

For definitive results, particularly in regulated environments, samples often need to be sent to certified labs, like Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp, for confirmation. These drug tests utilize advanced methods to ensure accuracy and can withstand legal scrutiny. Workplace Screening Intelligence always uses labs such as Quest Diagnostics Drug Test, LabCorp Drug Test as they are SAMHSA Certified.  SAMHSA Certification is the Gold Standard for Forensic Testing.

Medical Review Officer (MRO)

A crucial figure in the process is the Medical Review Officer or MRO. This licensed physician reviews confirmed positive, substituted, adulterated, or invalid drug test results. The MRO assesses medical explanations for certain drug test results and ensures the correct interpretation. The Medical Review Officer is also responsible for Non Contact Positives as well as Safety Sensitive Notification.  The Non Contact Positive is issued after the MRO has contacted the donor at least 3 times.  At that time, the employer can assist with having donor contact MRO.  The Safety Sensitive Notification is given when a employee and/or applicant has a legal prescription, however, the MRO is concerned if they can perform safety sensitive duties while taking prescription.  This can easily be addressed with sending the employee to prescribing physician or occupational physician to address the situation.  Typically, a new prescription that will not cause safety sensitive concerns is prescribed.

FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse

The FMCSA Clearinghouse is a central database that stores drug and alcohol violations for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders. Employers must query the Clearinghouse for current and prospective employees’ drug and alcohol violations before allowing them to operate a commercial vehicle. The Clearinghouse FMCSA eliminates the need to verify no drug or alcohol violations with previous employers since there is 3 years of data in the FMCSA Clearinghouse.

DOT Physical vs. NON DOT Physical

In tandem with drug testing, a physical examination is often required – notably the DOT Physical, which assesses whether a driver is physically capable of safely operating a commercial vehicle. A NON DOT Physical might be less stringent and customized to organizational needs but still ensures that employees are fit for their roles.

Ensuring Accuracy and Compliance

Whether you’re conducting a 5 panel urine screen, wondering if “Can CBD show up on a drug test?“, or navigating drug screening near me, ensuring accuracy and compliance is key. Today’s drug tests are sophisticated and can detect a range of substances, including whether CBD can show up on a DOT drug test (usually no, as CBD is not THC, provided it contains less than 0.3% THC content, however, buyer beware due to manufacturing standards, cross contamination and the lack of oversite with CBD manufacturing).
