What is a 5 Panel Drug Test?  

A 5-panel drug test is a type of non-DOT drug test that screens for five specific categories of drugs: cannabinoids (marijuana), cocaine, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines, and opioids. This type of drug test is the most popular in the United States, mainly because the five categories of drugs are the most commonly used among employees. The test can be conducted using a urine, blood, saliva, or hair sample, and results are usually available within a few days.  

What is a 10 Panel Drug Test?  

A 10 panel drug test is a type of non-DOT drug test that screens for ten specific categories of drugs: cannabinoids (marijuana), cocaine, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, methaqualone, propoxyphene, opioids, and methamphetamine. This type of drug test is beneficial for industries such as healthcare, transportation, and law enforcement. The test can be conducted using a urine, saliva, or hair sample, and results are usually available within a few days.   DOT

Drug Test and DOT Physical:  

If you work in the transportation industry, you are required by federal law to undergo DOT drug testing. The DOT drug test screens for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP). All DOT drug tests must be conducted using urine samples and must be collected by a qualified DOT testing provider. Apart from DOT drug testing, employees are also required to undergo a DOT physical exam, which is conducted every two years to ensure the employee’s fitness to work. The DOT physical exam assesses an employee’s hearing, vision, blood pressure, and overall health. Less healthier employees may need to have physical completed every 90 days to a year until their fit for duty is healthy.  

The FMCSA Clearinghouse:  

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) clearinghouse is a database of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers’ drug and alcohol program violations. It is an online resource for employers, drivers, and testing providers to access information about the past drug and alcohol infractions of CMV drivers. Employers are required to register with the clearinghouse and conduct a full query of the database before hiring new drivers. All FMCSA Employers must also conduct yearly queries on their current FMCSA drivers.  The clearinghouse also provides real-time updates on drug and alcohol violations to ensure employers are aware of any potential issues.
